Cream Tea and river walks from Otterton Mill

During our stay at Ladram Bay we took a day trip to lovely Otterton Village and had a walk around Otterton Mill.

Otterton Village is a small quaint village of lovely period cottages about half a mile from Ladram Bay.  On the edge of the village, nestled alongside the River Otter is Otterton Mill.

Otterton Mill is a historic working watermill.  The earliest record of a mill in Otterton is from 1068 where a mill was recorded in this locality in a little known historical tome called the Domesday Book!

In mid 20th century the mill fell into disrepair until milling eventually stopped in 1959. But in 1977, the mill was restored and is now a family owned business and arts venue. The watermill is used by the family twice a month to make their signature stone ground flour and visitors can watch this in action and ask the millers questions.

Otterton Mill is a nice little pit stop for a cream tea or a good starting place for a coastal walk.

On site there is a bakery and a cafe-restaurant.  There are shops selling local food, gifts and crafts, an art gallery featuring a large variety of local artists work from painting to sculpture.

I also noticed that they  run events and live music, and it’s a lovely little space for it.

If art and cream tea isn’t your thing you could just sit by the river and relax..

Otterton Mill is open April to September, every day 10am to 5pm and Friday and Saturday evenings in the summer.

October to March – seasonal times apply (check their site for details)

Hot tip: There are also some lovely coastal walks from here, you can find some on the South West Coast Path website.
